And now: safe behind glass!

P.T. Artist Sandra Stowell Posted on June 7, 2013 by ptartistJune 7, 2013

Burials the Drawing, framed

Burials the Drawing, framed

It is framed. The frame is decrepit and marred, but I think that works with this piece, so I chose NOT to restore it. But perhaps this was rationalization to be lazy?

It would be so lovely to have a professional framer doing the work, and to choose custom frames, but that is not an option on my budget, so I store cheap used frames, and re-use them. I have to be creative with sizes, since I rarely mange to end up with a finished piece that fits the size & style of mat and/or frame available.

It is quite a challenge, and a major chore. My studio is not very clean, never dust free, and I have to try very hard to avoid including fragments of art materials, fingerprints, and more inside my glass. I find it all stressful, but what a relief it is when I am finished! Now I just hope no one will find something unacceptable that I have missed seeing! Still, if they do see a problem, I hope they tell me…

More work: stop! Again…

Burials the Drawing draft 7

Burials the Drawing draft 7

This started as a rough sketch, almost a doodle, but I could not put it down. I continue to be drawn to it, and hope that now it is a finished work… 🙂

It contains several elements that appear in my work:  the soft, pillowy “fields”, the wrapped figures, and the organic, leafy elements. And smudging, of course! All this rather satisfies my psyche in some way. While some may find my mummy figures and these more abstract wrapped shapes worrisome or even morbid, I do not. I find them somehow comfortable/comforting!

More work on… STOP!

Curly Twigs V draft 11 scanned

Curly Twigs V draft 11

The last fairly subtle changes barely show up at this resolution: the piece is approx. 24″ x 18″, and I have to scan it in four parts. This low resolution image does not show the impact of some of the recent shadings and added color.

Recent changes mean I scan twice, then merge down onto an earlier full scan. Getting it all aligned is a real pain, and I know I am off by a few pixels… and those errors multiply! Very tedious.

You may even note the small changes (especially to upper left curved “twig”) in this photograph taken after framing (too lazy to take out and rescan now!) As you can see, the lighting & color are rather different in the photo (vs. the scanned image at top).

DragonflyRedwing

It took five tries to get lucky with this dragonfly. The resonant Redwings were everywhere, and south of Rainier (F.S. Windy Pt. campground) A. dippers again:

Some fence sections in my yard

P.T. Artist Sandra Stowell Posted on May 13, 2013 by ptartistApril 18, 2014

The box spring panel screens my trashcans (and anchors them on windy days).

Samurai Fence Panel
The black mesh kimono was made years ago, while at my previous P.T. house,  from an older Seattle composting bin mesh. The Samurai came about to put on the kimono when we moved here to our SIP house. He can be identified as a samurai by his topnotch, his kimono, and his “sword” (the machete hanging at left 🙂

Pitchfork Person, updated 2012

Wheels Tower in work
This pitchfork person has been revisited twice, and is in a new location, but it is still “on the fence”. The start of a new fence section, composed of a homemade bench, and this tower of wheels, and another piece which features a bicycle wheel below an “art” panel.

Curly Twigs V continued: draft 6

This “underground” variation of my “Curly Twigs” has been sitting untouched for quite some time. I liked where I got to, but did not know how to proceed. And perhaps I still don’t! But I am working on it again. First I printed a reduced size scan to work on, but I did not use that concept. Still, it broke the stalemate…

Here is the worked print, and the draft as it sat for weeks:

Working in My Yard is Never Boring …

Yard Art Tangles I

Yard Art Tangles I

I don’t let working in the yard stay boring for long: I take a break and make some yard art!

This piece: soaker hose, pex pipe, hose fittings, drill bits, ping pong ball, wire, spray paint lid, spray paint.  It is mounted about 10′ up, on a PVC pipe set into a cylindrical rock basket (gabione).
