I have made some (mostly) subtle but important changes from the previous posting 😉

Parting: Sad Angels

P.T. Artist Sandra Stowell Posted on April 28, 2019 by SMay 2, 2019

This is a scan of (most of) a mostly finished collage using two of my drawings. The “sad angels” started as a graphite drawing, which I scanned as usual. I created a couple of digital variations, then worked further on the printed pieces to finish these three sad angels. The abstract wooded scene scan has been enlarged, and is also further modified after printing. The figures, leaf drawing, and feather print are attached with matte medium.

The collage is a little too big for my scanner, so the top & both sides are cropped. And of course I cannot resist trying out a digital foil variation:

Sad Angel

P.T. Artist Sandra Stowell Posted on April 4, 2019 by SApril 25, 2019

I think my Sad Angel drawing will become part of finished work, perhaps collaged into one of these woodland scenes?

Abstracted Variations

P.T. Artist Sandra Stowell Posted on March 17, 2019 by SApril 2, 2019

I am on Draft Three of this doodle, initially sketched while watching a video by a rather dedicated abstract expressionist/colorist artist. Just decided to riff on something he showed, and my own quick response to it, and to his ideas. I have digital variations of photos of the first two drafts, and have a high resolution scan of draft three, which includes colored pencil in addition to graphite.

This is all just playful to me, with no hidden meanings emerging. But what fun!

Not My Words I

P.T. Artist Sandra Stowell Posted on February 24, 2019 by SMarch 15, 2019

This has changed a bit in the final version. It is now darker and more complex with the addition of more watercolor and subtle collage elements. It is now time to stop, and to declare it finished!

The scan of the original is on the left. As you can see, it is fairly dark and subtle in color. But since I do enjoy drama as well as subtlety, I have created two digital variations. These are included to the right of the original 10″ x 10″ x 1″ collage on wrapped panel.

Map Lines

P.T. Artist Sandra Stowell Posted on February 12, 2019 by SFebruary 14, 2019

Further color work was needed on this drawing in order to regain a balance, both for the original and the generated pattern. The latest, final? drawing is in the lower left.

Planning Sculpture

P.T. Artist Sandra Stowell Posted on January 24, 2019 by SFebruary 8, 2019

I have an intention to create three standing figures for placement under the wild cherry trees in front of my studio. I hope to make them approximately 4′ tall, varying the heights slightly. I am not sure what these statues will be made of, or even how they may eventually look; things change (especially in my art).

My concept is they will be simplified standing figures, very upright … a bit in the line of old-fashioned clothes peg dolls. So I started doodling, first in graphite & watercolor, followed by some digital pixel dust, of course.

The last concept is an attempt to get practical about implementation as a sculpture. It is based on using PVC or ABS pipes of various diameters for the figures, except for the head & shoulders. The figures could be free standing, with the pipe legs could fitted over stakes in the ground, that could run up into the torsos. Might work!

I could then pad & wrap the figures for cementitious outer layers if I want to add detail, curves and different proportions than available with pipes.

Twelve Labors

P.T. Artist Sandra Stowell Posted on December 14, 2018 by SDecember 21, 2018

This is a 9?x12? page divided into 12 squares, each representing difficult achievements in my life!  The inspiration is the Twelve Labors of Hercules, the media are water soluble graphite, watercolor pencil, & watercolor paint on paper, draft 1 is on the left, draft 2 in the center, with the digital version of draft #1 at right.

The events are not in chronological order.  Captions for the squares/events, left to right, top to bottom:

  1. early rebellion, childhood success stopping ballet lessons,
  2. prison like boredom #1,
  3. grey boring sensory deprivation (career at Boeing) from which I …
  4. escape into a more colorful world (Port Townsend),
  5. growing a garden, in more ways than one,
  6. angst, anger, dysfunctional personal dynamics learned as a child,
  7. from which I extract myself (mostly),
  8. house #1 (building the straw-bale home in Port Townsend),
  9. appreciation & awareness of nature,
  10. making art, my own studio, etc.
  11. making art: expanding into sculpture, casting, & learning to carve rock,
  12. house #2, my current home & studio.

Twelve Labors (minus 2)

P.T. Artist Sandra Stowell Posted on December 12, 2018 by SDecember 14, 2018

Twelve (- 2) Labors
Foiled!

A small exercise from last night, incomplete:  this is a 9″x12″ page divided into 12 squares, each intended to represent a difficult achievement in my life!  The inspiration is the Twelve Labors of Hercules, the media are water soluble graphite, watercolor pencil, & watercolor paint on paper.

Two more to go, probably involving art!

The storyline, left to right, top to bottom:

  1. early rebellion, success stopping ballet lessons,
  2. prison like boredom #1
  3. grey boring sensory deprivation (career at Boeing) from which I …
  4. escape into a more colorful world (Port Townsend)
  5. growing a garden, in more ways than one.
  6. angst, anger, disfunctional personal dynamics learned as a child,
  7. from which I extract myself.
  8. house #1 (building the strawbale home in Port Townsend)
  9. appreciating nature
  10. blank
  11. blank
  12. house #2, my current home & studio.
