After more work: scan it!

Scanning gives me more control and higher resolution than a photo, but… my scanner is limited to 12″ x 17″. This piece is 18″ x 24″. So multiple scans, and much care with exact alignment is required. Even so, I have settled for 3, rather than the 6 scans required for the full image. I need some overlap for accurate alignment and matching light.

I like the version above better. For me, the difference (a much lighter grey background at top left, plus more lights in the red-brown twig) makes the whole piece more buoyant, more lively, more magical and mysterious…

Curly Twigs Tangle III: After the Fall

This piece became over simplified and lost the magic as I “finished” and tidied it up. So it needed a great deal of rework. I hope the tangle magic is coming back, along with a bit more finish and complexity.

Working with a Variation

Curly Twigs II New Variation

I have made verious changes to a version of the second “Curly Twigs” piece, which was graphite & colored pencil drawing on vellum paper. I scanned this, worked on the digital image, creating layers, tidying, modifying tones & colors, and enlarging the image. I printed this onto a quality Epson coated matte finish paper at (not quite) 12″ x 18″. Then I worked a bit more on the color using Pan pastels and colored pencil.

It looks very different from the original now!

Completing an old sketch…

Something to Hide

I found this young lady in one of many half-filled sketchbooks, and determined it to be incomplete. So I took an hour to work on it today, since I am between projects! I always procrastinate for a while before starting something new. This drawing seems to be an illustration for a book I have not yet found or read.

The off-center focus rectangle is only in the digital version after scanning the drawing, of course. The original drawing is without the softer focus outside edges that create the focus rectangle…
